Module 2 focuses on the SENCo as a key resource and source of curriculum advice and leadership. It seeks to develop the SENCo as a confident and knowledgeable manager, fully capable of running a support system that can identify, assess and provide for individual pupils. Experienced practitioners from prep and senior schools will offer different whole school models for participants to discuss and compare.
Part One - 18th & 19th October 2010
Part 1 starts with the current SEN legislative framework (SENDA 2001) and the emerging practice of the Every Child Matters agenda. However, a large proportion of time will be given to issues concerning individual learning needs, target setting, IEPs and assessment.Day 1 - 0930-1630 - Managing whole school provision

- The National context
- Defining SEN: Codes of Practice for SEN & Disability + Every Child Matters
- Learning Support in an independent school (Prep School SENCo)
- What's in a label? Identifying Individual Needs
- Managing Individual Education Plans
- An overview of tests used by psychologists and commercially available standardised tests
- Basic statistical principles
- Reliability and validity
- Using the right test
- Test administration, test results and confidentiality
- So what do we do now? Practical suggestions for working with pupils, colleagues and families
Part Two - 14th & 15th March 2011
Part 2 is devoted to examining the learning needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties (Dyslexia and Dyscalculia) and also those with challenging behaviours (Asperger's and ADHD). Course members will be encouraged to critically examine the impact of specialised approaches across key stages and to reflect upon effectiveness of their work at school.Day 3 - 0930-1600 - Working with Specific Learning Difficulties
